Potions: Beauty Primer: DIY Recipes

Now for the fun part. Add to your beauty potion arsenal this cache of easy, low-ingredient recipes for beauty potions that will give you physical beauty boosts.

The first concoction is useful as a base for many other beauty potion products. Homemade Non-Petroleum Jelly. You’ve heard the spiel “you are what you eat…” well, this is true for what you put on your skin too! Remember, everything that goes on your skin is being absorbed by it, so stay away from junk and chemicals. If you wouldn’t eat it, don’t put it on.

Homemade Non-Petroleum Jelly

(aka DIY “Vaseline”)

from One Good Thing by Jilly Bee

Ingredients

1/8 cup grated beeswax (about 1 ounce)
1/2 cup olive oil

Method
Combine beeswax and oil in a small saucepan. Melt over very low heat or in the top of a double boiler.  Pour into a jar to cool.

Beeswax pellets I bought in bulk off of Amazon.com

I used extra virgin olive oil that I use for everyday cooking.

I didn’t use a double boiler….but I melted the beeswax into the olive oil

at a VERY LOW TEMPERATURE.

Even at that LOW temp….it melted together VERY quickly!

Then I poured it into a 1/2 pint mason jar and set it on the window ledge in the kitchen

with the window cracked open. It hardened up within 30 minutes.

A substitute for my “former trusted friend” Vaseline is today’s…..

Next up we have an easy  way to make an alpha-hydroxy mask which helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles normally costing anywhere from $40-$100 in a store and full of chemical additions that you can’t pronounce.

Lemon-Milk Alpha Hydroxy Mask

from Crunchy Betty

This is the top-voted comment, and with good reason. It’s a simple, ultra inexpensive, and very effective facial mask that lets you harness the power of nature’s natural alpha hydroxy acids (instead of spending jillions on special creams).

Crafty Kate suggested using half-and-half, but I didn’t have any, and full-fat milk will work in a pinch. The extra fat in the half-and-half will make for a thicker mask, but you can get the same benefit by using plain milk (again, make sure it’s whole milk).

Here’s how it works: Both milk and lemon contain natural alpha hydroxy acids, but they also work in tandem – over a few hours – to really enhance the AHA content. The lemon juice curdles the milk, which causes the bacteria in the milk to go crazy producing lactic acid (the alpha hydroxy acid in question). After a while, you have a super charged AHA mask that costs pennies – literally.

This is how I made mine:

Lemon-Milk Alpha Hydroxy Mask

  • 1-1/2 Tbsp full-fat milk (*hormone and antibiotic free please!)
  • 1-2 tsp freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 small wedge of sliced lemon
  • Small bowl

In your small bowl, combine the lemon juice and milk. Stir well, and dunk in the lemon wedge. Leave this on the counter (do NOT put this in the refrigerator, or you stop the bacterial process that you want). It will curdle and look funny; this is good. After 3-4 hours, spread it on your clean face and leave on for 15-20 minutes. Rinse well.

(Note: Be careful for a few hours if you’re going out in the sun after this mask, as it will cause photosensitivity.)

To top it all off, the first and last beauty product you use: toothpaste. For some reason we feel like all those chemicals in our toothpaste are necessary for clean, healthy, white teeth. Not only are most of those chemicals super harmful (just check your label for the notorious sodium lauryl sulfate) they are absorbed directly through the soft tissues in your mouth into your blood stream. It’s safer to stick to all natural ingredients that you would normally use, and because these simple toothpastes work so great, you’ll soon feel free and happy knowing you made the good switch!

Homemade Toothpaste

I know.

Looking back at my life in the years past, I’m fairly certain that making my own toothpaste would not be a thing on my agenda.

But as sure as my granola gets baked every month so now will my toothpaste.

Made that is.

Not baked;-)

I came across this recipe a while back and just knew I would try this.

Some day.

I finally got around to it this past week.

It’s so simple you too will wonder why you’ve never tried this.

I will caution you in that if your used to Colgate or Crest, which my family highly is.  This my friends fits nowhere amongst that category.

It’s not sweet at’tall.

It’s REAL toothpaste.

Hardcore.

Plain and Simple.

But it cleans.

I’ve never felt my teeth so sparkly and fresh;-)

Three out of four teeth brushing family members dig it.

For a full-immersion beauty potion, try this Rosemary Ginger Bath Soak to relax your mind and rejuvenate your skin.

Autumn Bath Soak

The tradition of bathing for health began centuries ago, says Parry. “Baths not only make us smell good, they are an essential part of balancing one’s health. Soaking in natural ingredients can heal wounds, detox the body and soothe nerves.”

Recipe:

  • 3-4 sprigs fresh rosemary (4 to 5 inches long each)
  • 1 inch chunk fresh ginger root, peeled
  • 1 cinnamon stick

Place rosemary, ginger root and cinnamon stick into a pot and add 4 cups water. Bring to a boil over medium heat. As soon as water boils, turn off the heat and let herbs and spices “stew” for a minimum of 1 hour. Strain.

When ready, add your herb infusion into warm bath water. Inhale deeply to enjoy the natural fragrance of this mixture.

DIY Berry Lip Stain

Commonly used in ancient times as a natural beauty boost is a berry lip stain. This one from the Beauty Department is not only simple, it’s delicious!
